America
The United States of America no longer calls itself united. After the Second Civil War, the institutions held but the name didn't. What's left dropped 'United States' in response to the fracture — like Facebook dropping 'the.' It still functions. It still governs. But it's a smaller, quieter version of what it was.

By 2039 it's a tourist destination embracing Americana nostalgia — and home to some of the world's wealthiest individuals. Banking-friendly laws help.

Texas
This ain't Texas' first rodeo at independence — the first was after the Battle of San Jacinto, over 200 years before. Houston is one of its biggest cities — Adrian Kuldell's hometown, ground zero for the story.
